Kidney Healing Meal for Dogs

This recipe if for those dogs who are afflicted with kidney disease. It is proportionally low in protein. make it as soupy with broth as you can; the dog's kidneys need to be flushed out.

1 cup ground beef (8 ounces)
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 cups cooked whole long grain white rice (regular - not instant)
1/2 cup (or more) beef broth

Brown the beef in the olive oil in a large skillet over
low heat until cooked through, approx. 20 minutes.
Combine the beef and rice in a mixing bowl with the beef broth.
Cool to room temperature and serve.

Variations

7 cups ground beef (3 1/2 pounds)
1/2 cup olive oil
14 cups cooked whole long grain white rice
3 1/2 cups beef broth

Protein: You may substitute ground chicken or turkey for the beef in the same proportions. Make the broth
consistent with the meat - that is use chicken broth for a chicken dish and turkey broth with turkey.

Dr Bob - My Kidney diet may be served solo as an alternative to pet food or may be mixed with any natural, low
protein food of your choice. If you like you may vary the grains by feeding oatmeal or barley. Parsley and asparagus
work as gentle diuretics helping the kidneys flush wastes
and impurities. Also, for dogs you can occasionally substitute tofu for the chicken.

1 cup brown rice or millet
3 cups filtered water
2 hard boiled egg yokes (organic)
½ cup cubed, de-boned chicken meat (hormone and antibiotic free)
2 tablespoons grated asparagus
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
1 tablespoon sesame oil (unrefined)

Cook rice (or millet) with two-and-a-half cup water, approximately 45 minutes. In remaining one-half cup water,
cook cubes of chicken (about 5 minutes). Mix chicken and rice (millet) with chopped raw vegetables and oil.
When cooked, add egg yokes, multivitamin, and other supplements to mixture. If your animal’s appetite is poor,
flavor the stew with plain organic nonfat yogurt (2 teaspoon for cats and one-and-a-half tablespoon for dogs)

As Meal
Small dogs/cats (1-12 lbs) ¼- ½ cup
Medium dogs (15-35 lbs) 1 cup
Large dogs (50-85 lbs) 2 cup
Giant dogs (85 + lbs) 1-3 ½ cups

Canine Restricted Protein Diet

This is a recipe for a homemade restricted-protein diet, similar to Hill's k/d in nutritional value and effect on compromised
kidney function (the recipe comes from a sheet of such that Hill's provides for vets to give to their clients.

1/4 lb. ground beef (*do not* use lean round chuck)
2 cups cooked white rice (without salt)
1 hard-cooked egg, finely chopped
3 slices white bread, crumbled
1 teaspoon (5 grams) calcium carbonate*
(*--Calcium carbonate sources: Ground egg shells; Drug and Health food stores.)

Also add a balanced supplement which fulfills the canine MDR for all vitamins and trace minerals.

Cook beef in skillet, stirring until lightly browned. Stir in remaining ingredients and mix well. This mixture is somewhat dry and its palatability can be improved
by adding a little water (not milk). Keep covered in refrigerator. Yield 1-1/4 lbs.
