VICTIMS of a one-legged burglar have told how their attacker's false limb fell off after they caught him stealing precious items worth £15,000.
Courageous couple David and Heather Greenwood, of Sunnybank, spoke exclusively to the Free Press after Keith Bryson was convicted of burglary and three counts of handling stolen goods at Reading Crown Court on Friday, September 3.
Bryson, 56, of Foxes Piece, Marlow, was acquitted of a second burglary nearby and of assaulting Mrs Greenwood. He was released on conditional bail to be sentenced on October 15.
Mrs Greenwood said: "We are relieved that finally it's all over and that we can get on with our lives."
The retired couple had gone to visit friends on Tuesday, August 10, last year. When they returned home at around 5pm they realised they had been burgled.
It was after they had phoned the police and while they were checking the house to see what had been stolen that Mr Greenwood, 59, spotted Bryson walking up their footpath towards the house less than an hour after they had returned home.
Mrs Greenwood, 57, said: "We thought it might have been the police arriving only he didn't look much like a policeman. He walked along the pathway and down the side of the house. He then went towards the open patio door."
In fact, Bryson was returning to the house having made several earlier trips taking items including silverware and coins.
Mrs Greenwood added: "It was only then when I thought 'It's the burglar coming back what a cheek'. I said 'what do you think you are doing?' He was quite shocked because he must have thought we were going to be out all day. He tried to run, but the patio is quite high and he had to come past me so I just grabbed him and shouted for help."
Despite Mrs Greenwood's brave attempt to stop him from getting away Bryson managed to throw her off, but he only got halfway down the drive before her husband tackled him.
Mrs Greenwood said: "David managed to get him down onto the front lawn and our next-door neighbour came over to help David apprehend him. It was at that point that he Bryson was complaining about his leg. I looked down and saw it was at an angle that it shouldn't have been, but I knew it wasn't broken.
"I realised then it was false."
Bryson's artificial limb had come loose leaving him stranded until the police arrived a few minutes later and arrested him.
The Greenwoods have since recovered around £10,000 worth of the stolen goods, but are still missing several objects, including a gold watch and a silver necklace.
Mrs Greenwood added: "It's only when it's gone that you realise how much you value something not in monetary terms, but sentimentally. It leaves you with an awful feeling of emptiness." _________________ GARBAGE DIRTY PEOPLE. I'VE BEEN IN YOUR HOMES |
